Compiler error:cob32: invalid symbol __iob in sidefile /opt/cobol/lib/cobisy

Problem:

Compiling a program and/or running cob -V from the command line, and getting an error similar to the following:

cob32: invalid symbol __iob in sidefile /opt/cobol/lib/cobisym                                                                      

Resolution:

Make certain your $PATH environment variable is set correctly.
