Problem:
Windows Vista differs from earlier Windows operating systems (eg. Windows XP) in that you must take into account security restrictions which are defaulted into the operating system.
As it stands only NetExpress 5.0 and NetExpress 5.1 are currently supported on Windows Vista. Before installing any wrappack, fixpack or hotfix it is stronly advised to carefully read the installation instructions on the SupportLine "Products Update" website page as there are specific installation instructions for each wrappack.
The aim of this article is to emphasise further security issues pertaining to Windows Vista which are not mentioned in the installtion instructions on the website. If you do not amend the security settings indicated below, you will get the an error message when attempting to install the patch which will be along the lines of:
"Server 5.0 WrapPack #005 has not been installed. Please contact Micro Focus SupportLine".
Resolution:
Firstly, you must be logged on as Administrator.
Then, in order to amend the default security settings, go to Start > Run > and type in the command "gpedit.msc". This will bring up a page entitled "Local Group Policy Folder". In the left hand panel you will see a hierarchical structure of folders which you should open as follows: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Installer. At this stage a series of tunable options will appear in the right-hand panel. Depending on your own in-house policies you should enable and/or disable those options which you will allow you to install the Micro Focus fixpacks.
Those to enable may include:
- Enable user to patch elevated products
- Always install with elevated privileges
- Prohibit non- administrators from applying vendor signed updates
Those to disable may include:
Prohibit patching
Having enabled/disabled the appropriate settings, you should now be able to successfully install the fixpack(s).
