This article explains Server Express and Application Server licenses.
Problem:
When done infrequently, installing of license keys can be confusing because of the different types of licenses, license utilities, and ways in which licenses can be installed and uninstalled. The following should help with your understanding of the processes involved.
Resolution:
Server Express comes packaged two ways. One is called Server Express, the other is called Application Server. Server Express is the development product. It allows users to write, compile, test, and debug COBOL applications. Application Server is a deployment execution subset of Server Express, intended for the production or end user environment where COBOL programs are run and no development activity takes place. In order to use Application Server in a production environment, it is necessary to create COBOL programs on the same version of Server Express, then port (copy) them to the production system. However, Server Express itself contains the complete runtime environment, so it is not necessary to install Application Server on any machine which has Server Express. The one product serves both user communities.
Because there are two sets of functions (development and production) associated with Server Express, there are two classes of license and two different sets of tools for license installation and management.
License key information is delivered on a red card included with every new product or additional license delivery. Note: New licensing is not required for product updates, say to Server Express 4.0 from 2.2, so there is no license information on any cards which may be enclosed with a product update. License information on the card includes the words Server Express or Application Server for Server Express. Which of these phrases you see tells you, in effect, which license tool set to use.
Sometimes license information is delivered by email. In such cases, be sure the license type is given or ask the sender for clarification as to the license type. If all else fails, SupportLine can decode the supplied license key information and tell you which kind of license you have.
Sometimes there will already be a license with the same serial number installed. The most common causes are replacement of a temporary evaluation license with a permanent license and an existing license updated with an increased user count. In those cases, the proper action is to uninstall the existing license first. If the license is new, for example, the serial number does not already exist in your license database, skip the uninstall steps given below and go right to the installation steps.
