If you are still having a problem then you should really open up an incident with Micro Focus Customer Care.

You can either move the cursor over the variable which you wish to monitor and hit q(uery) c(ursor), or hit q(uery) e(nter name) and enter the name of the variable in the text box.
Once the value of the variable is displayed, you can *then* hit F4 (or / 4) to monitor the variable.
F4 from the main animator menu is for switching between screens when in split screen mode.
