Problem:

We are trying to install the fixpack and are getting the following:

File was downloaded to a PC, FTP'd in BINary format onto the AIX server, execute permission applied, but will not extract.

COBDIR=/apps/mf

Please advise why it will not allow us to create the tar file.

Resolution:

The reason is because COBDIR is not set to a directory location containing the correct version of Server Express.  Fixpacks are designed to be installed onto specific versions of Server Express, and the de-encryption routine checks the COBDIR setting to be sure the fixpack is applicable.

In this customer's case, COBDIR was set to an older version of MF COBOL.  The problem was solved when they set and exported COBDIR to the location containing their more recent version of Server Express, and in particular, the "Application Server" product (note that the fixpack filename in this case contained the string "appsrv".
