This article explains how to resolve the error message "Unable to add licenses to the security key" in License Server 4.0.

Problem:

When inserting a Response key into the License Server, we received the error message "Unable to add licenses to the security key". How is this resolved?

Resolution:

A possible reason for this error is that the IUSER_servername (where servername is the actual name of the machine) entry in the server Admin group is not set to Power User (or even better, Administrator).  This is required because Microsoft IIS needs to have at least Power User privileges to be able to add its entries to the registry since Microsoft has tightened up on the registry access in Windows. The steps below should resolve the matter:

  1. Log on with full administrator privileges.
  2. Go to Control panel.
  3. Double click the administrative tools icon.
  4. Double click the computer management icon.
  5. Expand the "Local users and groups" entry.
  6. Expand the users folder.
  7. Right click the entry in the right hand panel which is IUSER_servername (servername being the actual name of machine).
  8. Select Properties from the drop down menu.
  9. Select the "Member Of" tab.
  10. Ensure that there is an entry of Power User. If there isn't, then add Power User to this member group.
  11. Save and close this screen.
  12. Now expand the "Groups" folder.
  13. Double click the "Power Users" entry.
  14. Add the local user of the machine (IUSER_machinename) to the Power Users group.
  15. Save, then close down and retry with the key.
