What version of RM/COBOL are you attempting to install on Windows 8.1?

Micro Focus has only tested, and only supports, RM/COBOL v12.09 on Windows 8.1.  Therefore, if you are using an older version of the product, then, it may be incompatible with that platform.

So, I would recommend that you upgrade to RM/COBOL v12.09 if you intend to use Windows 8.1 in your environment.

Below is a link to the Micro Focus "Contact" page which provides information on how to get in touch with a Sales Account Manager:

Micro Focus Sales can assist you with obtaining an upgrade to the latest release of RM/COBOL for use on Windows 8.1.

I have to develop in 12.06 because A LOT of our customers are on that version, and do not have the money to updgrade their runtime.

I think the issue is with my PC, for some reason it is not recognizing me as having administrator rights.

I have been using 12.06 on Windows 8.1 for 3 months now, and it works great.

This all came about because I tried to use a 12.09 runtime with the 12.06 compiler, and I screwed everyting up, so uninstalled everything, and now I am trying to re-install 12.06.

I have no control of purchasing anything, so me contacting a sales rep won't help me.

For the record, there were no changes in the compiler between 12.06 and 12.09 that would prevent development with a 12.09 compiler for 12.06 runtimes.  If there had been, the Z compiler option could have been used to restrict using a language feature which required a later runtime.  Version 12.00 through 12.09 all support object version 15 in the compiler and runtime.  Object version 15 is the latest object version available.  The RM/COBOL Users Guide Appendix H explains object versions in detail.

Amy, without support there's only so much help that I can give you.  However, it appears that there is something wrong with your installation.  I was going to suggest that you uninstall everything and install it again, but you've already tried that.

Do you know how to turn UAC off?  (Try Googling it if not.) Try turning UAC off, performing your installation and then turn UAC back on.

One other idea is that even though you have uninstalled everything, the RM Use Counting service is still there and won't work with 12.06 (although it should).  You can also try uninstalling everything, and then go to the Control Panel, open the Administrative folder, then the Services app, find the Liant RMUC Service and make sure that it has been uninstalled too.  If not, then open a Command Prompt as Administrator and enter the following commands:

cd C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Common Files\\Liant Shared

rmucs12 -stop

rmucs12 -uninstall

Finding the Command Prompt on Windows 8 may be tricky.  Making sure that you start it with Administrator privileges is critical.  This usually involves right clicking on the Command Prompt icon and selecting Run as Administrator.  (I don't use Windows 8, so I'm going to have to be vague here.)

I hope this helps.

I am attempting to install a Virtual Machine on my PC and going to try to install it in Windows 7.  (Since I know for sure that it does install in that version of Windows).  This is the suggestion of our IT department aft er they tried to figure out why it wouldn't install either...

I will let you know how it goes...

I apologize as the the License Activation Server was down yesterday morning, which, prevents the generation of activation codes for Liant product installations.

We have resolved the issue with the License Server, though, and it is now up and functional.  Please try your product installation again, and, let us know if you encounter any additional issues.  If you are prompted for an activation code during the installation process, you can visit http://activate.liant.com in order to obtain an activation code.

Thanks,

-Steve
