Problem

How can I define multiple record types in Relativity?

Resolution

The standard way to map a FD to multiple tables is to map a particular record type to a table. If the FD does not contain multiple 01 levels, or does not contain the right record type because redefines are used instead of different 01 levels, then new record types need to be defined in the catalog.

This is done by creating user defined record types.

See the "Defining Record Types" topic (and the topics to which it refers) in the Relativity Designer help file.

An outline of the steps that are required is:

1. Add condition (88) items subordinate to the field that defines the record type.

2. Create a new record type for each of the seven different record formats. (From "Defining Record Types" topic, click on the link "Identify the data items within each record type structure.")

3. Define the filter for the record type. (From "Defining Record Types" topic, click on the link "Define a record type filter.")

Note: you need to define record types for an FD prior to building any table definitions base on that FD. A table may contain data items from multiple record types (from the same FD) in the table's definition, but the usefulness of this is quite limited and is therefore not recommended. (See the "Handling Multiple Record Types" topic.)
