I have the PE versions of both (unidata and universe) and my VM is currently running universe, do I (or should I) spin up a new rocky linux VM to install unidata on or can I install unidata on the machine currently running universe?
I guess spinning up a new VM is not a big deal but I was just curious if they both could run on the same system
any advice or suggestions appriciated

Yes, it is possible to run both UniData and UniVerse on the same system.
This is a bit easier on UNIX/Linux where the telnet connection brings you to the OS command prompt, and you can then go to whichever Database you like.
On a Windows system you would have to have two telent services running, listening on different ports.
