Newbie here.  My name is Glenn and I have primarily worked with standard relational databases.  I have been tasked with extracting the table data from a UniVerse database into a set of CSV files.  I wish I could explain why, but management just gave me this directive, no reason or other details.  I know others in our IT group need to migrate a Windows Server 2003 installation to Win Server 2016 because the data from our StreetSmarts application - contained in the UniVerse DB - needs to still be available after the server migration.  I understand a MVDB doesn't have tables like a relational database, but instead has "files" that contain the data.  I am hoping some of you can give me guidance on how I can extract the file data into CSV files so I can consider this task completed and let management do with it what they will.  Thank you so much for any help you can give me as I don't even understand how I can see the file data or what structure exists for the extraction.  Much appreciated!  Glenn

@Manu - I do not know about the data dictionaries and would need assistance finding out. It is a multi-value db but I do not know about the AssocName, AssocPhrase or file sizes.  The organization was using the StreetSmarts application which used the UniVerse db, but I have no familiarity with that application.  We currently have Entrinsik Informer connected to the db and I may be able to simply run reports to extract the data.  If you can provide any assistance with that I would appreciate it.

@Tyrel - Yes, that is what I thought. As I mentioned to Manu, I may be able to just run reports to get the data and export to a CSV file.  I do not have a clear understanding of why we are doing this or what the goal is.  I'm not sure my management know what they want and definitely only know database buzzwords, not actual functionality or details.  I will check out what documentation I can find.  Do you have any good links for that?

@Will - yes, Which is why I am not clear as to the why of doing the extraction.  It is possible that the StreetSmarts application won't run on a newer version of Windows Server, but since the db is connected to the Entrisik Informer application users can run reports using that.  Part of the issue is users have already created reports in the StreetSmarts application and are reluctant to stop using it.

Thank you all for your replies!  I will be meeting with management to get more clarity on the why and the ultimate goal once I have a more clear understanding of what is involved so I can speak intelligently about it.  Any other thoughts that arise I would be grateful to hear!

Hi Glen,

First by first  is your database dictionnaries correctly define for all fields ?

Des the db files use multivalue and if Yes : Is the AssocName and Assoc Phrase correctly defined ?

Second : what size (nb records)  are the dbfiles you want to export ?

Please put some détails.

It's not just a matter of table vs file, mv data is not flat.  There are essentially tables in tables, and this doesn't even include the possibility of sub-values.  CSV is only possible if you go through the trouble to flatten everything.  A more flexible format, e.g. JSON, would allow a more direct translation.  Manu is also correct, clean dictionaries, with well defined depth and association names will be essential to automate the dump.  Association phrases, while helpful, aren't essential, and unless they're complete, can actually be misleading.  (Side note, a dictionary isn't a schema; it doesn't enforce anything, only describe whatever the developer wanted to describe.)  If you haven't already looked at the UniVerse documentation, I'd suggest diving into the System Description document, concentrating on Dictionary Items.  Are the dictionaries primary A/S-Types or D/I-Types ... or a mix?  The system description will help you decipher these and create a plan.  You'll likely need to go file-by-file.

Could you not just migrate the Universe DB to the new server with all the data inside it intact?

Glenn

I attaché a little basic to export a file to multiple csv based on fields sets you can define file by file.
There is a sample base on HS. SALES/CUSTOMER.

Else, we can organise a charged work with my company to help you.
