I was an Info/Basic programmer with about ten years of experience working on a PRIME 9955 system. When Prime went out of business the college I was working for switched to Oracle and I've been working with Oracle since 1996.
As I coast into retirement I'm interested in reviving the multi-value skills I once had. I downloaded UNIVERSE and UNIDATA from Rockets website and started playing with it. They seem very similar.
For those of you that were once PR1ME Info/Basic, Inform, Primos developers, which environment would you suggest I focus on, UNIVERSE or UNIDATA?
Also, is there a cheap way to get a Personal Edition (PE), single seat license? I really don't want to develop and small or large scale systems. I'm really interested in reviving the PICK skills I once had.
I have a copy of INFO/PC that I installed on an old Windows 98 system I recently rebuilt to play games. INFO/PC was a cool PE system.
Thanks

Use $OPTIONS INFORMATION in your UniBasic code.
Use I-descriptors and D-descriptors for your dictionary types.
There are no segdam or segsam files, you should use 64BIT and dynamic for all file types.
Use AE in Universe and stay away from ED or use Eclipse-based editors like BDT or XLr8
Get a one-user system that allows 10 sessions from a Rocket Software VAR

Both UniVerse and UniData support many features of Pr1me Information. If you are just looking to brush up your multivalue skills you may want to take a look at OpenQm. It has many advanced features like PAN and SCROLL for Inform reports, Classes in BASIC as well as many other very cool features. It comes with a copy of Accuterm and is inexpensive as far as licensing. You can also find an old copy of the Open Source version of QM on the internet (Google ScarletDME.)

Sorta related...
I happened upon this a while back and it looked interesting:

I can't tell what the most recent update is, and development looks slow or maybe even stalled.

Prime Information compatibility. Also, OpenQM is another option (also a
Rocket product) that follows Prime Information compatibility but can be
configured for Pick etc... QM is probably cheaper to license if you wanted
to buy a single user... UV and QM run on UNIX / Linux / Windows... I've
never worked on Unidata so I don't know about that environment.
