Hi, I'm new on Unidata. Right now our company is using Manage 2000 with Unidata RDBMS 8.2 version. My question is, is it possible to open my unidata database to SQL Server Management Studio, how? If it's not possible can I create a view on SQL Server Management Studio containing all the data from my unidata database, how? I already created a view file and successfully compiled it but I can't still see it on the SQL Server Management Studio. I also created a link server on SQL Server Management Studio using the U2 ODBC.

Jason, I have worked with UniData and Manage-2000 for 30 years. The problems you will run into are the Value Marks and Sub Value Marks in UniData, but Manage-2000 goes beyond that with even more data separators, 7 more. UniData has tools to create SQL schemas that will deal with the sub values and multi-sub values in the data. But it won't help you with the M2K sub data. Mike Daniel with MAD Consulting has a great tool to export M2K data to SQL. You should also look at NOVO Motion products.

Thank you David, right now my concern is opening the database from Unidata to SQL Server(SSMS) so I can view or create a report from it. Is there a way I can do that?

That depends on the data you need for your report. Manage-2000 has a lot of reports already built-in. It also has tools like REPORT.BUILD and REPORT.BUILD.EXT where you can build your own reports. Also, IEP allows you to build reports and downloads. If want to send data directly to EXCEL then use Mike Daniel's Web Tools that export data in EXCEL, CSV, TAB, HTML, etc. Email me directly for more info: dag at dagconsulting dot com.

Are you saying you can't see the U2 ODBC database? You can create views from these tables or refer to them via four part naming if you have the server settings right.

Hi Greg, I've already created a DSN using U2 64-Bit ODBC Driver, my question is how can I create a view from Unidata that I can use in SQL Server. I already created a linked server to SSMS using ODBC but I don't see any tables/Files from my Unidata database. If it's not possible to open the file/table from Unidata to SSMS, is it possible to create a view?

Jason,
Not knowing what you have tried, or have not tried, so far makes it difficult to give advice.
If your Company has a DBA for UniData and/or someone who administers the application, they would be best for setting you up with what you need to make the connection from SQL Server Management Studio to the U2 ODBC data source.
The DBA or administrator could have put restrictive permissions on the ODBC/SQL access, or may be using other methods to block access entirely.
If your DBA and/or application administrator can not help you with setting up the ODBC data source, my next suggestion is to contact the application provider, since some set up a separate accounts to handle ODBC access, and may have already created the views you are looking for.
<sidenote>While the documentation, provides information on how to create views, I highly recommend that you check with those I mentioned previously, before doing anything on a live system.</sidenote>

Hi Mike, what I'm trying to do is creating a view to Unidata and open that view to SQL Server using SSMS? I don't know if it's possible? I've already created a linked server to SSMS using the U2 64-bit ODBC.

In UniVerse, not seeing the tables at all would suggest HS.ADMIN has not been configured. However I've only used file based UniVerse so I don't have any experience with Unidata or views, but I would expect four part names to work with views too. With UniVerse, the tables cannot be queried directly from their listing under the linked servers in MSSQLSMS because no table metadata is made available via the ODBC.
I create views in SQL Server using OPENQUERY or four part naming.
I sometimes use pass though queries with Native UniVerseSQL which avoids the need to reconfigure the HS.ADMIN and @SELECT phrases in the DICTionaries.

Thank you for the response Greg, I just notice a file D_DV_SF_VEN under my database directory, and when I go to SSMS under the linked server that I created using ODBC, under views folder I can see Administrators.SF_VEN. How can I create my own view like this? I already have a view file created and compiled it successfully in Unibasic. I just don't know what to do next after compilation.

Unfortunately I don't know about Unidata.
In file based UniVerse, each account must be individually set up for ODBC using HS.ADMIN. It must be run again after tables view are added to an account before they become visible under the linked server.
