Trying to reload Unidata 8.2 by first unloading it. Something screwed up during the removal. Now I’m getting a message that says “unable to find regisistry key SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\Unidata\8.2\UDTHOME”. Dont know what to do next???

Kevin,

A thought - is the old version of UniDats old enough that it uses a different registry key - IBM, Informix, Ardent or UniData? Please take a look in the Windows registry and check - let us know. If it is that then there are a few routes, If not we can try a ‘big hammer’ - though I strongly recommned (1) creating Windows recovery media and (2) taking a registry backup first as well as (3) A zipped backup of any UniData files you wiush to keep.

Please PM me for the details of the software you can use to purge an old UniData version.

Regards

JJ

Kevin,

By unload did you mean unistalling, please confirm what you mean by an unload.

If you wanted to reinstall UniData, you can just reinstall over the top of an existing instalation  it will treat is an upgrade installation , overwrite the existing files and rerun any linkages needed you shouldn’t have to uninstall it.

If you uninstall it, you will have lost quite a few things from the install and probally most annoyingly would be the global catalog.

If UniData failed to uninstall but you still have the UD directory.

You could try putting back the registry enteries and try again.

In your UniData installation directory you will find a file called install.log, it shows you everything done during the install.

Look for lines similar to (yours will 8.2)

11-17-2025 15:05:06 Installing Registry Values....
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\CurrentVersion UDVersion 8.3
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\8.3 UDTHOME C:\u2\ud
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\8.3 UDTBIN C:\u2\ud\bin
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\8.3 UDTTEMP C:\u2\ud\Temp
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\8.3 STOPPED 0
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\8.3 InstallDate 11-17-2025
11-17-2025 15:05:06 SOFTWARE\Rocket Software\UniData\8.3 ProgramFolder Rocket U2\UniData RDBMS 8.3

That will allow you to reconstruct the registry enteries to get round the error and try again.

Regards,

Jonathan

I would also suggest contacting contacting your support provider as another option.

Yes, I meant uninstall. Neither Doug nor Unidata support will answer me because I did not pay either of them $300 for a single answer. Now, I’m still stuck.

Kevin,

Are any of these versions the Trial  versions - and if not,  do you have a current Support contract for the licenses involved?

There are some tools that could help, but I’d want to be sure of exactly what you have first as I would not want to step on any current Support arrangements.

JJ

Hey JJ,

I have been running this same version on my desktop for literally years and have never had a problem that I couldn't resolve myself, so I have never needed help before. So obviously, it is not a trial version. I worked for over 30 years (retired now) for a shop supporting and enhancing a software solution written in Unidata.

I recently loaded the Unidata onto my laptop (I have 9 users available) and that’s where the problem is. I have a service request in with ACER to see if I could re-load the laptop with windows and start the process again. Failing that, I’m still stuck on the laptop.

Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I appreciate that you took the time to answer. First of all, it is Unidata 8.2. Secondly, it is running on an Acer laptop that I purchased about a week ago. And finally, the “big hammer” is what I am looking for, in other words, I would like to start over because there is nothing worth saving on the laptop.

Some other information that may or may not be of interest: I can’t even tell you how many years I have been running Unidata 8.2 on my desk top, but it’s a bunch, it works fine, no issues.

I tried to contact Acer to see if the laptop could be reloaded from scratch to start over; still waiting for a response from them. And finally, all of the required data is still available on my desktop so a system back-up on the laptop should not be necessary just a complete restart. Unless, of course, you have a better idea, in which case, I’m all ears.

Thanks,

Kevin Hond
