Hi All ,

We currently manually run retrieve sentence to pick up reports from universe 11.2.5 and AIX 7.2

Can we use scheduler to automate it ?

Or anything to automate it .

Please assist.

Hi Roland,
You should be able to use the AIX 'cron' facility to launch a job at a specified time. If you plan to start multiple jobs at the same time with 11.2.5, the 'execuv' command should be used instead of 'uv' or 'uvsh'. The 'execuv' command will ensure that each job started has a unique signature. The 'execuv' command is documented in the UniVerse User Reference guide.
Thanks,
Neil

Roland,

There are multiple ways this can be achieved, depending upon the exact requirements in terms of report formatting and filtering as well as client tools. These include:

  1. Exposing the data as JSON in a  RESTful web service for a data consumer of choice.
  2. Expose the data as an XML document for an XML data consumer of choice.
  3. Using a client dashboard product of choice for either 'canned' reports and dashboards or building and tailoring under user control 'on the fly' - e.g.
    1. Corvu NG  from Rocket
    2. SAP Crystal Reports
    3. (and others)
With a dashboard, you can also create a 'base report' and then layer additional filters and transformations on top of this to customise the same basic data for specific consumers.

In terms of scheduling and automation, most dashboard products have the capability of running reports and updating dashboards both on demand and on a set schedule. This includes the ability to either email reports (e.g. as PDFs)  or to notify of an online dashboard update that can be accessed via a URL from a browser.

If scheduling at the O.S level then this depends to some extent upon the O.S of choice:
  • UNIX: crontab
  • Windows: Task Scheduler
  • or third-party tools - there are a good number around
Pointer: If your chosen option is ODBC and the client platform is Windows then I'd recommend using JDBC instead for performance reasons. This also has the advantage that it can be used on identically on UNIX without having to go through the extra hoops of acquiring and installing a third-party UNIX ODBC driver. Neil Morris has already covered additional good advice on implementation.

To summarise: I'd recommend looking at a dashboard product to front-end the queries, and this can  also offer different presentation formats such as meters, bar charts, pie charts and geo-mapping. This can also include data federation from multiple sources inn the same dashboards.

Please see the Corvu link for just a few examples of dashboards and controls.

Regards,

JJ

Hi Roland,
As Jonathan notes, the documentation is available on line in multiple places.
Let me know if you have any questions once you have been able to review the execuv documentation.
