Hello everyone,
We are planning to upgrade our UniVerse (UV) ERP system this year and also do a hardware refresh. We would like the hardware refresh to include running in a VM (we don't currently). Our current UV system is running on an IBM AIX server with Kaminario flash storage (~2TB) with our largest hashed file being 120GB / 23M records.

Looking for any insight or opinions related to getting more speed and performance for UniVerse i.e. stick with AIX or go with another UNIX / Linux? Virtualize or don't virtualize? Nutanix VM or something else? Anything better than flash storage from Kaminario?

Thanks in advance!

Lance,

It’s hard to provide recommendations without knowing more about the application itself, your user count, and other requirements.

We run on IBM/AIX and are in the design stages of an upgrade from Power8 to Power9 systems.  If you’d like to chat more, let me know and we can put a call together.

Brian Paige

Concur with Brian - It's difficult to give recommendations in the abstract.  Specific information about application usage and peak-busy interactive, batch and periodic (e.g. year-end) workloads would need to be gathered and profiled. This is pretty 'hands-on'.

In one specific area, optimise the file system for a relatively large volume of small updates in random access mode. Different O/S and hardware will have different methodologies and some are 'adaptive' - i.e. self-tuning. A check with the hardware-vendor-of-choice is recommended.

Lance,
What did you end up building out? We run AIX on IBM Power servers and our management wants to look at Linux on cheaper HDW.
