Hello all - I'm sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for... We are moving our Unidata 8.2 from Unix to Linux. I have been through such a conversion before some 15 years ago but thought others might have more recent recollection and encountered other issues.
Is there a list of specific potential pitfalls to check?
Obviously the syntax of Unix commands changes to linux. Spoolers, FTP, emails, etc but what about any Unidata changes? I remember issues with the locate command... did others have that issue also? What other issues did you all find?
Thank you in advance for your time, consideration, and assistance.

Hi Kathleen!
Depending on how you're moving content between systems, you'll have to be conscious of the big-endian/little-endian differences. UV has the fnuxi command to convert files. I'm not sure what the equivalent would be in Unidata.

Brian/Kathleen,
Program object code :convcode
Data files: convdata
Indexes: convidx
If the files do not need conversion between big-endian and little-endian then the commands just skip them,

I'm not looking for information on the data move - I'm looking for any unidata program changes that need to be made in the business logic.
Thanks all,

Generally, the Unidata stuff itself doesn't usually require much. However,
where you're reaching out to do OS-level commands for printer management,
faxing, etc., those will need to change to the print manager on Linux,
usually CUPS.
For example, if you're using enable or disable in Unix to enable or disable
print queues, those commands change to cupsenable and cupsdisable for
CUPS. You can still use enable and disable with symlinks and full path
references, but it's just as easy to change from enable/disable to
cupsenable/cupsdisable.
Moving to Linux from AIX in particular, spooler management is quite
different. How you create printers, manage printers, all that is quite
different. But once you're inside of Unidata, I don't think you'll need to
change much if anything at all.

We recently went through a conversion from HPUX to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Insofar as UD programs were concerned, we mainly needed to identify those places where we might shell out or execute unix commands from a UD program or subroutine and adjust them accordingly. For us, most of the commands functioned the same on both, and there were some that functioned similarly (may have different options, etc). I've uploaded a spreadsheet that includes the investigation results of the commands we have used--it's not a complete list, just the ones I know about, FWIW.
