Hi Team,

Our partner has received response from our support team about Vertica node down (48-node cluster) to change default from "malloc" to "jemalloc" by changing symbolic link. However, they've few questions as below.

 - Vertica has been including jemalloc library since v8.0(/opt/vertica/lib/libjemalloc.so)

So, Can I use that library without compiling?
- Why Vertica doesn't use jemalloc as default, despite including jemalloc library?

Thank you.

Support should have provided all the instructions to launch vertica using jemalloc, it's a dynamic library so there is no need to recompile. Jemalloc is a little bit slower than the allocator in glibc, but under some circumstances it does a better job managing memory.

There's OOM issue and make some nodes down. After investigated, support team suggested to use jemalloc.

Thank you for information.

Hi,

Yes you can use jemalloc with Vertica 8.x. With some customer workloads, we find that jemalloc actually works better, and I have customers that are using it with Vertica 8.x in production today.
