Hi forum,

a Vertica customer is on a Vertica Express license. They are asking if the Express license allows them to use

  1. UDx functions
  2. rank() over (partition by) function
  3. Pattern matching (match clause)
  4. Workload Analyzer

In our ALA, page 4, there is a clear NO on the workload analyzer.

Can we please get guidance regarding UDX, rank() and pattern matching usage with V Express?

Intuitively the ALA term “Advanced SQL Functions” could be interpreted as the corresponding list in the V SQL manual
https://www.vertica.com/docs/9.2.x/HTML/Content/Authoring/SQLReferenceManual/Functions/Analytic/AnalyticFunctions.htm?tocpath=SQL Reference Manual|SQL Functions|Analytic Functions|_____0

Surprisingly User Defined Functions are not mentioned in the ALA Express list (they are explicitly excluded for VSQLOH).

Thank you
Dieter

This page lists the features of Express vs. Premium:

https://www.vertica.com/product/on-premise/

For Express:

  1. UDx functions (YES)
  2. rank() over (partition by) function (YES)
  3. Pattern matching (match clause) (NO)
  4. Workload Analyzer (YES)

But I'm not 100% how accurate this page is though :/

Hi Jim,
I think we need to refer to the Vertica ALA for this. I do attach the paragraph on Vertica/Express from page 4. The Workload Analyzer is explicitely excluded as is pattern matching.

So my take at this minute is

For Express:
1. UDx functions (part of) - see the restrictions on ALA text items 3 and 4
2. rank() over (partition by) function (YES). I assume Yes because this is a SQL standard window function
3. Pattern matching (match clause) (No, explicitly excluded)
4. Workload Analyzer (No, explicitly exluded)

I fee I would better be sure on this.

Thank you
Dieter

Hello

The official document is the "Additional License Agreement" for Vertica available on line (publicly) and updated occasionnaly

https://softwaresupport.softwaregrp.com/doc/KM03290474?fileName=ALA_Vertica_Nov_19_2018_5200-1711.pdf

The base linik is https://www.microfocus.com/en-us/legal/software-licensing

Currently form this doc (it can change over time)

The following features and functionality (as defined in the documentation) are not included with licenses of Vertica Express Edition:
1. Advanced SQL Functions
A. Analytical Functions
B. Patterns Matching Functions
C. Time Series Functions
2. ROLAP SQL Functions
A. ROLLUP Aggregate
B. GROUPING SETS Aggregate
C. CUBE Aggregate
D. Pivot
3. R Integration via Vertica pre-built UDX
4. Python Integration via Vertica pre-built UDX
5. Workload Analyzer
6. KV Interface
7. Fault Groups
8. Live Aggregate Projections
9. Text Search
10. FIPS 140-2 Support
11. Flattened Tables
12. Parquet Export
13. Predictive Analytics Functions
A. Normalization, outlier detection, sampling, imbalanced data processing and missing value imputation functions
B. Linear regression, logistic regression, k-means, naïve bayes, random forests, singular value decomposition, support vector machines, generalized boost models, neural networks, page rank, k nearest neighbors
C. Confusion matrix, receiver operator characteristic (ROC), error rate, lift table, mean squared error, r squared, wald statistics

So, some differences with the vertica.com page (for example "column security" ?)

My 2 cents

Hi Francois,
my question to the ALA is: what exactly counts into

  1. Advanced SQL Functions
    A. Analytical Functions?

In our SQL Ref the chapter on Analytic Functions lists fundamental SQL functions.
These are certainly not what we want to exclude.
https://www.vertica.com/docs/9.2.x/HTML/Content/Authoring/SQLReferenceManual/Functions/Analytic/AnalyticFunctions.htm?tocpath=SQL Reference Manual|SQL Functions|Analytic Functions|_____0

How can we get a list of SQL functions which are NOT part of express?

Thanks
Dieter

Good question,
May be we should consider the following entry point in the documentation

https://www.vertica.com/docs/9.2.x/HTML/Content/Authoring/AnalyzingData/SQLAnalytics/UsingSQLAnalytics.htm

We do need help and clarification on this

Hi Francois,

the link you refer to is certainly a better candidate. Still I do assume that the standard ANSI windowing functions are available for Express as well.

It would be good to find an answer which can be defended to a customer wanting as much analytics as they can for their V Express money.

Thank you
Dieter

I forgot that I had the attached file which details functions not allowed in Express. This is from Mark Lyons (received on 8/10/2018). Not sure if anything has changed.

Thank you Jim,
this documents makes things crystal clear!

So the final answer is

For Express:
1. UDx functions (part of) - see the restrictions on R on Python UDX,
ALA text items 3 and 4
3. rank() over (partition by) function; available in Express
4. Pattern matching (match clause): No, explicitly excluded in the function list
5. Workload Analyzer: No, explicitly excluded in the function list

Thank you!
Dieter

I was not aware that for VSQLOH we have the same restriction
