Last I knew, the data modeling tools that are popular on the market don’t support Vertica as a data target. ERWin, which got bought, and Embarcadero are also pretty widely used. You design all your tables, and then you can have the tools automatically generate the tables when you’re done. Like Jim said – they won’t create projections for you, and they don’t recognize Vertica. But you could have them spit the DDL out as a text file, and then create it manually. The syntax is pretty much the same, especially if you go with something like PostGres or SQL Server as the target. That only requires a few changes.

There is not a “Vertica” Modeling tool to my knowledge… Unless you consider “Data Base Designer” to be a modeling tool ☺

But I get what you are asking. I’m an ex-Oracle person and I am familiar with the bloatware other DB’s offer. I might be swayed to think we should offer tools like that, but then again, what do we really want? Fast analytics. You can’t overwhelm a DB with cumbersome tasks and expect fast analytics.

That being said, any modeling tool using JDBC, ODBC, etc. can connect to Vertica. Model away! But they won’t be able to tune projections.

Hi experts,

While discussing with one SI for next year project, they asked for modeling tools for Vertica. Only thing I could find was “Toad Data Modeling”.
Does Vertica has any other modeling tool than Toad?

Hi Kee,

We recently look a look at Toad's Data Modeler which had integrated Vertica as a supported database. Might be worth taking a look at that. Here's the link to the connection guide we wrote that covers basic setup and config to get connected, plus some known issues and limititations. https://www.vertica.com/kb/Vertica-Integration-with-Toad-Datamodeler-Connection-Guide/Content/Partner/Vertica-Integration-with-Toad-Datamodeler-Connection-Guide.htm
