Hi forum,

an existing Vertica customer is looking for a tool to document Vertica databases for their ETL developers and data scientists. From SQL server projects the customer is used to and likes Dataedo. Unfortunately V is not on th supported DB systems list. Please see
https://dataedo.com/how-it-works
for a description of Dataedo.

The customer is open to different tooling. Do we have a recommendation? Something like
https://dbmstools.com/database-er-diagram-tools/postgresql

Thank you
Dieter

Dieter,

The tools which Partner Engineering has tested against Vertica are listed on https://www.vertica.com/documentation/vertica/technology-partner-integrations/. The only Data Modeling tool to date I believe is Toad Data Modeler. The connection guide for it is here: https://www.vertica.com/kb/Vertica-Integration-with-Toad-Datamodeler-Connection-Guide/Content/Partner/Vertica-Integration-with-Toad-Datamodeler-Connection-Guide.htm. Note at the end there are some limitations we found which may impact it's value depending on the need.

I hope it helps.

Hi Dieter, as the Postgres link shows, Squirrel SQL is a possible option though its graph diagrams are probably more basic. Here's a PK/FK relation in Squirrel:

Hi Stephen and Bryan,

thank you for your comments. To show clearer what we are after I do append a sample output from Dataedo. Dataedo is not a data modeling or SQL query tool but its focus is documentation.

The customer is wanting a doc created in HTML or pdf which describes the contents of a DB. Found this list of diagram/reverse engineering tools
https://dbmstools.com/database-er-diagram-tools/postgresql

Both your suggestions, Toad and Squirrel are in this list.

Thank you
Dieter

Dieter,

Thanks for the clarification and example output. Nothing I can think of matches that against Vertica. I actually downloaded a trial of Dataedo and tried it using the Postgres connect (as that sometimes works with Vertica) but it gives an error as it's calling what appears to be a Postgres specific function. Sorry, not much help.

Dieter,

Some possible good news. I contacted Dataedo Product Manager and they plan on releasing a general ODBC connectivity fairly soon. It's in beta right now and he's open to the customer trying it to get feedback. So if you want to pass along to your customer to contact Dataedo about beta testing the upcoming ODBC connectivity it might provide them something to work with and contribute to refining. Contact name I have is Piotr Kononow mailto:dataedo@dataedo.com. I hope it helps. We will pursue on our end to see if there is value in looking into a future tech partnership with them to get a Vertica specific connector like Postgres has.

Here is a link to the Dataedo Beta that uses ODBC:

https://dataedo.com/download/Dataedo_7.2.1_ODBC_BETA.exe

Seems to work okay.

And here's an output of connecting it to one of my internal test dbs. It currently only picks up tables. They are aware and if we establish a tech partnership down the road we may be able to get a Vertica connector. I would definitely have the customer contact them and get the link for the beta through them. This will allow them to show interest and strengthen the likelihood of a future connector.

Hi Stephen and Jim,
the "ODBC generic version" of Dataedo is super cool news!
Will pass on to customer.

@Stephen: have tried all offered DMBS; got the same error with Postgres

Thank you
Dieter
