Hello AskV colleagues

A customer who has Vertica on-prem is considering setting up their DR in the cloud (probably Eon / AWS, but other options being considered). They would be looking to replicate their on-prem data into S3, then spinning up EC2 instances on demand when required.

Their question is whether we have any best practices / recommendations to help them in their planning?

I have found http://confluence.verticacorp.com:8080/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=38341737 and of course our Vertica User Guide, though was looking for something closer to matching their scenario.

Are you aware of any material out there or customers who are doing this already?

Regards
Mark

Hi Mark,
That page is dated but Vertica did introduce support for backing up to S3 in 8.1.1 - https://www.vertica.com/docs/8.1.x/HTML/index.htm#Authoring/NewFeatures/8.1/8.1.1/BackupAndRestore.htm

I'll forward your request to the vertica-ask-br and maybe you might get some customer references.

Hi Mark, I don't really have best practices but I have "basically" tested the scenario you mentioned albeit with a tiny 3-node database. I think the main thing is for them to test the situation themselves before they ever run into a real problem. One key thing to consider is the S3 file lock location. They need that on the restore so the EC2 instances will need access to it. To simulate that I just used used a location on an existing EBS volume when I ran the on-prem backup. In reality you would not have that because you have not spun up the EC2 instances yet. So you might need to use another NFS location and then establish NFS access to it from an EC2 instance once you spin up the AWS nodes. There may be other ways to do this but I did not try them since what I did worked for me. I have some documentation (not overly detailed) that shows some of the things I did if you want me to send it. This was just one of 5 tests I ran that included restoring from on-prem to cloud (both AWS and GCP) for DR purposes.
