Hello all, I have a customer asking whether they need to upgrade their client drivers for their applications when upgrading to 8.1.1. Apparently they have a production application using a v5 driver package on v7.2.3 server. I imagine the issue is the amount of testing needed on the application side versus upgrading the server. Any thoughts? Other than missing out on newer functions, can they use v5 drivers on server v8.1.1?

Hi,

From what I've seen all drivers are mostly forward compatible.

See:
https://my.vertica.com/docs/8.1.x/HTML/index.htm#Authoring/SupportedPlatforms/ClientDrivers.htm

Being that your client is successfully connecting a Vertica 5 client driver to a Vertica 7.2 database, and the link above says that a Vertica 6.1 client driver can connect to Vertica 8.1 database, we can infer that a Vertica 5 client can also connect to a Vertica 8.1 database.

Hmm. I think that logic makes sense. :|

Unfortunately, I don't have a Vertica 5 ODBC or JDBC driver to test, but I was able to get a hold of the Vertica 5 rpm, install it and test vsql 5. As you can see in the image below, I could connect vsql 5 to a Vertica 9 database!

All that being said, I'd push them to upgrade the client drivers...
