Hello expert,

Documentation say that COPY_PARTITIONS_TO_TABLE is a fast operation after which the source and target table share the same storage (ROS).

Starting when the two tables will start having two separate storages? is it after any DML on one of the two tables which might make the first DML slow? or any of TM operations?

Is there any documentation explaining what happen behind the scenes?

Many thanks.
Mohamed.

Hello Mohamed,
The online docs mention that after a copy, the source table and target table share the same storage (ROS), but only initially, ie at the moment of the copy.
" partition copy increases performance by initially sharing the same storage between two tables. After the copy operation is complete, the tables are independent of each other. Users can perform operations on one table without impacting the other."

So after the copy, the storage will begin to separate, as a result of DML statements on either table.
This training page on Confluence has more background information - http://confluence.verticacorp.com:8080/download/attachments/47776178/copy_table_training.pdf?api=v2
