How i will get DATENAME in vertica?

Vertica as the abiliy to return the date of the week as numeric value ,  you can do someting like this to have it as a string . 

SELECT  case  EXTRACT(DOW FROM TIMESTAMP '10/24/2013')       
         when 0 then 'Sunday'
          when 1 then 'Monday'
          when 2 then 'Tuesday'
          when 3 then 'Wednesday'
          when 4 then 'Thursday'
          when 5 then 'Friday'
          when 6 then 'Saturday'
       end

Use TO_CHAR formatting:

SELECT TO_CHAR(TIMESTAMP '2014-08-21 14:34:06', 'DAY');

This returns the full uppercase day name. Day gives the mixed-case day name, and day gives the lowercase day name.
