Hello Vertica team,

A customer would like to have some vadvisor reports, they sent me the scrutinize reports. With all the issues with the support system portal, is there a procedure to generate a vadvisor report without creating a ticket please?

Many thanks

Hi Chaima,

Below is an email I received some time ago from Amy and this should still be the method to follow:

Here are the instructions for uploading a scrutinize to the Vertica scrutinize s3 bucket. Once you upload the file, you will receive an Advisor report within a few hours.

The following instructions provide you a single command to upload a scrutinizer file (tar/gz/zip) from either a Linux terminal windows or Windows cmd window. Please make sure that you have the full path to the file. Please do not edit the file name as generated by scrutinize. The file name should be in the following format, as example: VerticaScrutinize.20190815230001.tar.gz

Enter either of the following commands, passing the appropriate variables:

You can use the curl command (all on one line)
curl --request PUT --upload-file VerticaScrutinize.20190815230001.tar.gz -H 'x-amz-acl: bucket-owner-full-control' -H "x-amz-meta-email: myemailname@mycompany.com" -H "x-amz-meta-account: microfocus" https://vertica-scrutinize-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/incoming/

OR

Use the aws cli (all on one line)
aws s3 cp ./VerticaScrutinize.20190911192014.tar s3://vertica-scrutinize-upload/incoming/ --acl bucket-owner-full-control --metadata email= myemailname@mycompany.com,account=microfocus,caseid=SD12312312

When using the curl command, the following are the details of the command.

  • -request PUT
    o Means you are putting the file in the S3 bucket

  • --upload-file
    o Full path to the scrutinizer file you want to upload including file name, example: VerticaScrutinize.20190521125249.tar.gz

  • -H 'x-amz-acl: bucket-owner-full-control'
    o Gives vertica team full control of the file.

  • -H "x-amz-meta-email: myemailname@mycompany.com"
    o Provide your email address, so we may contact you with findings.

  • -H "x-amz-meta-account: mycompany"
    o Provide an account name, so we can identify the customer.

  • -H "x-amz-meta-caseid: SD02501224”
    o Provide a support case id, so we can identify the context of the communication. (Not required).

  • https://vertica-scrutinize-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/incoming/
    o The location where you should upload the file.
    o If you do not have SSL certificates configured correctly on your host you might have to do '-k https://vertica-scrutinize-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/incoming/' this is less secure, but we leave it to the sender to decide on its use

After you have uploaded the file, you will not be able to download it, albeit you can upload a new file to overwrite the old one of the same name.

For Security the S3 bucket you are uploading to is WRITE-ONLY. You cannot read from it or list it. i.e. if you try to download you will get an error as shown, basically anything other than a PUT will give you an error.

curl --request GET -k https://vertica-scrutinize-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/incoming/VerticaScrutinize.20190815230001.tar.gz
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Please note there is a file size limit of 5 GB on the upload size. you can find the file size by using the following command:

$ ls -lh VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar
-rw-r----- 1 username verticadba 2.5M Aug 20 08:38 VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar

If the file is larger than 5G we recommend you compress the files using anyone of the following commands and then upload the compressed file. Compressed files upload faster and consume much less bandwidth.

$ bzip2 VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar

$ ls -lh VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar.bz2
-rw-r----- 1 username verticadba 2.1M Aug 20 08:38 VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar.bz2 <== Upload this file
$ gzip VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar

$ ls -lh VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar.gz
-rw-r----- 1 username verticadba 2.1M Aug 20 08:38 VerticaScrutinize.20190820083806.tar.gz <== Upload this file

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out directly to Amy Miller or Sumeet Keswani.

Hope this helps?
