Hi, there was a discussion in January 2018 with R&D and one of my customers regarding Grafana. The Partner Management team was going to be following up with them but I have not yet had any feedback. Grafana has released an experimental Beta API some time ago but feedback was that it was not very good. The customer that is using Grafana uses it extensively to monitor all their clusters and have been very succesfull by writing their own interface.

Thanks a lot ! Has your client tried this one:
https://github.com/raintank/vertica-datasource

Do you have any details on what is the problem with the beta API from Grafana?

Hi,

I managed to get back to the customer and ask for more information. This is what I got back:

The current grafana Vertica plugin works in a way that you need to open a permanent "screen" with a node.js cli that opens a session to a single Vertica cluster. Then you can generate graphs with queries to the Vertica cluster that you set up.

It works ok, but only allows the specific cluster (not multiple clusters which is our requirement) and there is no convenient UI to set it up or maintain it (after server restarts it needs to be setup manually again for example).

Hello,
Grafana has developed a Vertica Plugin at https://grafana.com/plugins/grafana-vertica-datasource. It is available as a Premium, however they have 30 days trial.
Please check it out and lets us know if there are any limitation that we can work with Grafana and have them fix it.
Thanks,
Jawahar

Hi, a customer requested the Grafana plugin so I pointed them to the link above. However, it appears Grafana have removed the plugin as there is no longer a commercial (paid) demand, with details here: https://community.grafana.com/t/vertica-support/2493/5

Hi Bernard,
Grafana said that the Vertica Grafana Plugin that was developed is not ready to be released. They think it requires more work and didn't have plan to work on it anytime soon.

Hi Bernard,
Did your customer try Highcharts?
Highcharts is a charting library written in pure JavaScript.
It is being used by over 80% of the largest companies in the world and there are 2.6 Million code references to Highcharts on GitHub.
The standalone installation is very simple and free for noncommercial use.
BTW, VSQL alone can visualise several query result types in color and graphics. But for client agnostic and more complicated ones try Highcharts.

Thanks Moshe - I'll have a look to Highcharts
The fast it is used by 80% of the largest companies is not a proof it is good or it is the product I need though :-) we know other examples like this ....
Re Grafana , it is also becoming a well known and well used product , so I would think it would be worth to get it working with Vertica at some point
regards
Bernard

FYI Grafana works partially with Vertica using the Postgres plugin
