Backups fail with the error message: kex_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host This occurs when the SSH daemon (sshd) rate-limits pre-authentication handshakes because the MaxStartups parameter was reduced from 100:30:100 to 10:30:60. Restoring the original value and reloading sshd resolves the issue.
