After expanding the cluster from 1 to 3 nodes, several (super)projections lacked buddy projections. Without buddies, Vertica cannot achieve the design K-safety level, so MARK_DESIGN_KSAFE(1) reported lines such as “has 0 buddies.”
Environment
Product: Vertica Analytics Platform
Mode: Enterprise
Situation
After expanding the Vertica cluster from 1 node to 3 nodes, running
MARK_DESIGN_KSAFE(1) revealed multiple projections reporting “has 0 buddies.” Queries and operations continued to work, but the cluster could not achieve the desired K-safety level because buddy projections were missing. This issue typically occurs when the physical design is not updated after a topology change, leaving projections without redundancy.
Cause
The cluster’s physical design was not updated after expanding from 1 node to 3 nodes. Existing projections were created for a single-node topology and lacked buddy projections (same columns, compatible segmentation, different offsets). Without buddies, Vertica cannot achieve the desired K-safety level, resulting in
MARK_DESIGN_KSAFE(1) reporting “has 0 buddies.”
