This article explains the SSH connectivity requirements for Vertica’s Copy Cluster/replication process. It also provides an alternative method using Backup and Restore for environments where bidirectional SSH is not feasible.
Environment
- Vertica Database
- Copy Cluster / Replication
- Source and target clusters (e.g., Production and QA)
- SSH (port 22)
Situation
A customer attempted to perform a one-time data copy from a production cluster to a QA cluster using Vertica’s Copy Cluster feature. SSH was only open from Prod → QA.
Cause
Vertica’s Copy Cluster process requires bidirectional SSH connectivity on port 22 between all nodes of the source and target clusters. Unidirectional SSH (e.g., only Prod → QA) is insufficient, even for one-time operations.
