Customer reports this log message during startup:

host ['172.31.242.10'] report: Initialization thread logged exception:Data directory [/vertica/catalog/vbit/v_vbit_node0001_catalog] has group or world access

Is this a cause for concern, will it fail to start in the future? Are there any Vertica actions that change directory per,issions? Or is this due to something else like a management tool?

Hi Bryan,
It seems that catalog directory permission has not been set as 700.Can you please provide below information:
1) In which log you find this error.
2) Output of below command to check current permission of catalog directory:
ll /vertica/catalog/vbit
3) Is DB started after message logged in log file.
Regards,
Mohit

One more thing even if someone change the permission while db is down! it will reset back to 700. See below detail:
$ chmod 775 v_prodee_node0001_catalog
$ ll
drwxrwxr-x 9 dbadmin verticadba 4096 May 14 03:32 v_prodee_node0001_catalog
drwx------ 109 dbadmin verticadba 4096 May 14 03:00 v_prodee_node0001_data
$ admintools -t start_db -d prodee
..
Database prodee: Startup Succeeded. All Nodes are UP
$ ll
total 28
-rw-r--r-- 1 dbadmin verticadba 8572 May 14 03:33 dbLog
-rw-r--r-- 1 dbadmin verticadba 5 May 14 02:55 port.dat
drwx------ 2 dbadmin verticadba 4096 May 14 02:55 procedures
drwx------ 9 dbadmin verticadba 4096 May 14 03:33 v_prodee_node0001_catalog
drwx------ 109 dbadmin verticadba 4096 May 14 03:00 v_prodee_node0001_data
So I think changing permission more than 700 will not impact db startup. Hope above detail help!

Hi, this is Etsy case SD02685675 where they found message in admintools.log and go on to show that permissions are off after restart.
However, in the scrutinize I see they are running a number of tools like chef and gcsfuse that can touch filesystem permissions, so we are investigating that now.

Hi Thanks for update! As I said earlier that it won't impact db until we are not touching the files exists in catalog & data directory.
