A network-related question...

When setting up a network switch between nodes (in this instance x5), I am being asked if we want the storm-control setting to be unicast, multicast or broadcast.

I can find some references to these when re-iping a cluster, and a Confluence/Jira related to "We found may error due into the switch log due to STORM CONTROL threshold. Now we have disabled this feature and the cluster seems stable.
We think this switch control blocked the communication on the spread (on UDP packets) causing the system freeze"

Whoosh right over my head ;-)

Anyone with any thoughts on this?

Storm Control: OFF

Easy setting for Vertica "cluster private" network or single-home Vertica deployments.

A "storm" is a badly behaving application or failed network adapter spamming the network enough to impact useful traffic. Switch vendors implement a variety of ways to detect and mitigate storms. False positives block traffic that is essential to Vertica and other applications. OFF works everywhere. Reasonable thresholds that preserve storm protection while not conflicting with Vertica and other applications may be possible on some switch vendor + model combinations

Hi @MAW, sorry for hijacking your post, what does the customer mean by "system freeze"?
(one of our customers has had multiple issues where there were hung transaction/sessions that wouldn't go away unless the initiator is rebooted, support & R&D have been working on analyzing this for a while now. we were wondering if this could be a potential reason..)
Thanks!
Chaima

Hello @chaima

Whilst trawling around for something on STORM, I came across this on Confluence: http://confluence.verticacorp.com/display/TechSupport/Switches+Configuration+Best+Practice (and similar on Jira: http://jira.verticacorp.com:8080/jira/browse/COMM-45)

Either way, my "problem" has been resolved - now using the 10G switch (which I should have been all along) rather than the 1G "public" switch.

Regards
Mark
