Hello All,
My Customer is looking for vsql alternatives with graphical gui.
We proposed him DBeaver but he did not like it, at all. DBVis for VERTICA has limitation for one session only (I have never tested commercial version). This is one of major disadvantage against MS SQL. (Users are business side data scientis )

So I am looking for alternatives:
Main functional requirements:

  • Syntax highlighting
  • Query clause completion hints, object completion hints
  • Tree visualization of the object
  • Fast script generation (useful if table is very wide > 100 column) --> smilar as DBeaver has
  • DDL generation with projections
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • **Very important: **ability to run more than one query in two different tabs in parrarel: i.e: one query takes 20 min so they would like run other queries, whithout waiting for the first query to complete (of course if there are resources in the pool).
  • **Very important #2: **they want to run whole scripts from GUI, and they would like to have flexibility to stop script on error or continue, showing entries in logs in which there were errors (like in our vsql)

They are using native client of MS SQL server (they are get used to it) and they are looking for sth smilirar.

Question:
What are your experiences. What Graphical GUI DB clients customer are using (OpenSource or Commercial). Can You recommend me sth.?

I have found couple of them, here is my list (most of them I haven't tested yet):
1. DB Visualizer (Commercial)
2. Data Grip (https://www.jetbrains.com/datagrip/features/)
3. SQL Workbench/J - http://www.sql-workbench.net/
4. DB Solo - http://www.dbsolo.com/
5. RazorSQL (http://razorsql.com/index.html )
6. Squirell - as it crashes often it is not a good choice
7. Aqua Fold (http://www.aquafold.com/dbspecific/vertica_client.html) - on some forums at 2013 someone wrote - that they do not use Vertica features. - maybe it has changed with latest release.
8. Sqlectron (https://sqlectron.github.io/#gui) - completely new OpenSource
9. Heidisql - (https://www.heidisql.com) - supports JDBC - but don't know how work with Vertica

Any experiences with above ones?
Thanks in advance

Hi,

I myself have purchased DbVisualizer for use on the job. I've also had three clients purchase DbVisualizer for use at their locations after using the tool on three successful POCs. The reason that each client bought DbVisualizer was the same. They wanted a proven commercial product with support. They did not want some free/open source product touching their production systems. It also helped that DbVisualizer is one of the only tools that has built in Vertica specific aspects (i.e. visually see projections, DBA specific views, etc.).

Thanks!

Thanks Jim,
After my brief tests (run same queries in the tool and vsql) :smile here is the list of the commercial, worth to focus on.

  1. Data Grip - use JDBC, very fast, very customizable (it is SQL IDE), huge capabilities i.e can customize dialect. Unfortunately - not support VERTICA specific features (like projections). Does not has DBA capabilites (as it is SQL IDE)
  2. DBVis - use JDBC, very fast, supports Vertica specific functions: projections, dba view, but in terms of sql development support and query exectution has the weakest capabilities.
  3. TOAD Data point, use ODBC, very fast, supports Vertica specific functions like projections. Huge capabilities regarding building and executing queries (including scheduling, file import/export)
