Vertica wire protocol

Hello AskVertica,

I have a customer asking the following question (www.deltadna.com).

DeltaDNA currently uses Postgres as their proxy server for database access to Vertica. This avoids the need to have their database servers open to internet, which is a security risk.
Users connect via a postgres driver and it handles the wire protocol back to Vertica.
They want to make it more robust and to achieve this they say they need our wire protocol, so that their "Direct Access" tool can act like it is a Vertica database to the outside world.
Do we provide proxy servers? Or can they use Vertica's wire protocol?
Do we have the Vertica wire protocol details documented? Can we share this information with our customers?

Any feedback / assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Mike
