vnetperf not seeming to work - loops asking for multiple passwords

We were trying to use vnetperf on some MF-internal systems to check connectivity and the example command at https://www.vertica.com/docs/9.2.x/HTML/Content/Authoring/InstallationGuide/scripts/vnetperf.htm says:
/opt/vertica/bin/vnetperf --condense -hosts 10.20.100.66,10.20.100.67 --identity-file '/root/.ssh/vid_rsa'
however we tried something very similar, and it just starts looping prompting for passwords (typing in the password does not help):
/opt/vertica/bin/vnetperf -hosts labsystem2,labsystem3 --datarate 500 --duration 10
root@16.78.1.2's password: root@16.78.2.3's password:
root@16.78.1.2's password: root@16.78.2.3's password:

I was not under the assumption that passwordless ssh between the hosts was required at this point in the install process. Also, that same URL says to use --hosts not -hosts:
--hosts host1,host2,... A comma-separated list of hosts..
however we get the same behavior. Please help!

Vnetperf does connect to all the other hosts. If you can't SSH into those vnetperf won't be able to, either. You'll have to resolve the SSH connectivity in order for it to work. You can try SUDO to see if that resolves it, though.

Thanks for the suggestion Curtis however ssh works OK between these nodes. We do not have PASSWORDLESS ssh set up. Since vnetperf knows enough to prompt for passwords one would presume it does not require passwordless ssh, correct? I did not see that mentioned in the doc either.

Yea, I think so. It needs to be passwordless SSH. I've never been able to get vnetperf to work without it. It will, as you've seen, just loop endlessly (or at least enough that it becomes annoying).

  1. Have you run install_vertica? I think that is needed
  2. can you run this as dbadmin user rather than root user.

Sumeet thank you for the additional info. My understanding was that best practice is to execute the validation for Vertica prior to install_vertica in order to ensure that the systems the customer is about to install on are sufficiently performant. I can appreciate that the install_vertica will set up dbadmin on all the target nodes so that vnetperf could be run under the dbadmin userid. Perhaps instead of suggesting the customer do vnetperf prior to install I will just stick to suggesting vioperf prior to install, and then leave vnetperf to a "troubleshooting"-type activity that could be done later if performance issues are seen.

FYI this is in regards to my quickstart guide for COSO at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XBtOLiodg9gtRH_07ING4XNKkxrh_pGq/view

thanks
