When upgrading, is it necessary to start Vertica every time?

I have a customer looking to upgrade from 7.2 to 9.0.1. They reviewed the upgrade path and want to know if it is necessary to restart Vertica after each step, e.g. to rebuild the catalog or ROS files as described in release notes. Is this the case or does the RPM install plus upgrade_vertica script handle all upgrade tasks?

Hi,

A database start should be done at each RPM install/update_vertica run. There is work that the server engine does on startup to bring the data and catalog up to date. For example, the underlying objects like Vertica supplied UDxs might have changed and the internal upgrade needs to update them.

Hope it helps,

What might make the upgrade even more fun and exciting is that if there are multiple databases in the cluster, they'll have to start each of them so that they can be upgraded too!
