Hi all I have imported a NetExpress 5.1 project to Visual Cobol. the program starts with a menu that calls a new screen.this works fine because the flag inside the dialog system is correctly setted. in the second screen there are other buttons but when I push one of this, the flag associated in not correctly setted   why the second screenset doesn't set the flag? I have an application where I read a record, perform some calculations, and then decide whether I want to delete the record or save (“rewrite”) it.  The compiler gives me an error, apparently inconsistent with the MicroFocus documentation.   Please advise how I can achieve my purpose.   In Micro Focus Online Documentation the rules for Deleting a record state: The associated file must be open in the I-O mode at the time of execution of this statement. (See the topic The OPEN Statement.) For files in sequential access mode, the last input-output statement executed for file-name-1 prior to the execution of the DELETE statement must have been a successfully executed READ statement. I'm analyzing a survey where I let my client provide names for all her variables (e.g., TAILOR, NETWORK, LIFE, DENTAL).  My program automatically made a file description in a copy book, using her variable names as COBOL data names. The Visual COBOL compiler correctly barfed when it encountered two of her names -- SEPARATE and EXIT -- saying that these could not be used as variable names because they were reserved COBOL words.   I changed those to SEPAR and EXINT, and everything seemed to work out all right. Except that it WASN'T all right.  After a certain point into the record, the raw data stopped matching the variable names.  Each raw data item was assigned not to the correct variable name, but to the next variable name to the right.  The Visual COBOL debugger was no help.  I tried everything I could think of, to no avail, for more than two days.  Finally, I found the problem when I put in code that displayed the variable name and the var

Hello, We have a set of CL programs running in AS400 systems that trigger online transactions/programs(using STRCICSUSR command) from batch programs. And another set of online programs which trigger batch programs using SBMJOB commands. We have to re-engineer these programs to make them run in MicroFocus environment. Can someone provide some insights on how this can be achieved in MicroFocus?

 Hi We are using VC 2.3 for VS 2015.  We have a Windows Forms application that uses HttpClient, etc, to send and receive SOAP messages. But I read from Microsoft: "HttpClient is intended to be instantiated once and re-used throughout the life of an application. Instantiating an HttpClient class for every request will exhaust the number of sockets available under heavy loads. This will result in SocketException errors. Below is an example using HttpClient correctly."  I have a line sequential file that I am wanting to convert to an indexed file.  This is just for my own edification.  I am using the classic data tools to do the conversion.  My index is the social security number which begins at position 32 and is 9 characters long.  The sequential file has variable length records with a max length of 66 characters.  When I do the conversion, it ask for minimum of 41 and max of 66 which I use.  The conversion goes through without any problem.  When I open the file using the data tools I can see the ssn highlighted as the primary key.  However, when I read the file into my cobol program, I am constantly getting a 4/7 open error.  Any suggestions on why this is happening or what I need to do differently when doing the conversion?   Thanks.

I receive the following runtime error in a visual cobol naïve code application when deployed on a network workstation, program is called from a menu program;     I can run the program on my development workstation without issue.  Ideas on what I might have wrong?

I am trying to edit the default.aspx.designer.cbl in my cobol web application and finding it quite challenging. Is it possible to create a form (much easier) and then use that instead of the default.cbl? Failing that where can I find help editing the landing page? My cobol program was displaying a screen but this does not work with the web application. I will have many screens to design and there must be an easier way. Any help will be appreciated. Shirley

Is it worth learning native cobol or should i jump right into .net or managed?  Thoughts?

The environment is Visual COBOL 2017 and the objective is to put a program into sleep mode for one minute. Looking in the COBOL manual there is a System Routine of CBL GC NANOSLEEP that will do the job but the call to this routine fails (not found). Searching my C drive does not find the routine. So my questions are; 1. Is this routine the way to go or are there other alternatives?  2.  If this is the alternative, how do I acquire this System Routine?

I'm using the mFFH cobol facility to create a file trace in a managed cobol program.  It's working file, but when I run cobfhrepro3 to produce a report of the trace, the file name on the report is only 30 bytes.  I'm using a fully-qualified UNC path as the file name, and it's way more than 30 bytes. Is there a way to tell the trace facility or cobfhrepro3 to display more than 30 bytes of the file name? Just a bit of background...the program I'm tracing wasn't written by me, and was written in native cobol.  I converted it to managed cobol so we could use it in a WCF service.  After about 500 runs, the service crashed in the Micro Focus file handler.  I'm guessing that there is a file that is not being closed, so the system is running out of file handles.  Since the program uses a lot of files, I'm using the trace facility to try to match opens and closes. I'm currently trying to use VisualCobol for Eclipse for our legacy code base, in order to modernize our development tools. Up until now we develop in a text editor and compile our cobol-programs via shell script directly on the AIX target. Essentially the script executes the call of the precompiler and the cobol compiler separately. Depending on project conventions (basically naming of the sourcecode), the programm is compiled as standalone binary or as member of one of our shared object libaries. This approach of course requires different arguments to the compilers to achieve this goal. Now I have tried to create a similar behavior running in Eclipse but unfortunately failed with different approaches. What I like to achieve is that, when I start the compile of a single sourcecode in the IDE (via the option compile from the context menu of a cobol file in an remote cobol project), that my buildfile is executed instead of the project generated .cobolBuild. Hi! I'm having some problems with my database connection. I'm using Visual COBOL v4.0 (with Visual Studio 2017) and my database is Informix 3.5. I'm using Micro Focus ADO.NET Connection Editor to create an ADO.NET Data Source, with OpenESQL as ESQL Preprocessor. The ESQL connection statement from my COBOL program is: connect to "CobolInformix" (obviously "CobolInformix" is the already configured DSN). It works flawlessly until I am working on "standard" databases, allowing program to receive and write data.But when I try to get data from databases with specific connection settings (such as db_locale=en_us.1252 or unicode=true), I got an error ("Illegal use of host variables") because I can't set that properties. Greeetings. When I try to execute the .exe files, I've just downloaded, following the instructions from the email MF sent me, they  say that I do not have the MF installed, I am running windows 10. Sometimes when I build my visual cobol win form project I will get a compile error I-O error:  IDY file.  I then have to close visual studio, go to the debug folder of the project and delete the files within in.  I restart visual studio, open the project and compile is successful.  Does anyone know why this randomly happens or what can be done to fix the problem?   Thanks.
