I installed Visual COBOL Personal Edition 2.3 on RedHat Enterprise 7.2 Workstation successfully.  I started License Manager.  everything seems to be in place. When I started Eclipse,  it shows Micro Focus flash screen.   but Eclipse did not load ant COBOL plugins and COBOL Prospective.

So there is no way to activate it from  Visual COBOL Personal Edition 2.3 itself.  That is totally different from Windows version Visual COBOL Personal Edition 2.3.

So I need to use cesadmintools.sh.  but it asks me 16-digit activation code.

I know if I can input a valid 16-digit activation code. My Eclipse will load all COBOL plugins and Prospective

But where can I get 16-digit activation code for free Visual COBOL Personal Edition 2.3?

Really appreciated for any help.

On Windows,  When I started Visual COBOL Personal Edition 2.3 at first time, it asked me to use my email address to activate it. But on Linux. it did not load any COBOL plugins.  So Eclipse never asked anything for activation. only after activation, Eclipse will load COBOL plugins.

I have validated on a 7.1 system that when you launch EclipsePE from RedHat Linux the first time, it should present a dialog box giving you the option of entering the authorization code, or entering your email address. Try launching Eclipse again. If this does not present you with option of entering your email address, I will resarch the authorization code that was generated for that download. Please respond to my email to your account and I will assist further.

Thank you in advance.

I can show you what is on my RHEL 7.2 machine:

xu4.ddns.net/.../Shell.png

From shell command, I started Eclipse:

xu4.ddns.net/.../Flash.png

I can see MicroFocus logo and flash screen, After fully loaded, I checked Perspective:

xu4.ddns.net/.../Perspective.png

I did not see COBOL Perspective there.

I checked Eclipse Configuration,  it shows correct starting path.

xu4.ddns.net/.../Configuration.png

I checked Features in Eclipse,  none of COBOL features is loaded

xu4.ddns.net/.../Features.png

I checked Plugins in Eclipse. None of  MicroFocus plugins is loaded

xu4.ddns.net/.../Plugins.png

Eclipse runs without any errors,  but just Eclipse with all Java Features.

Hello jzhang18:

I can reproduce the missing COBOL perspective, even though I start Eclipse from $COBDIR/bin/eclipse, if I do not have a license installed for the product.

Using the license administration tool named cesadmintool.sh in /var/microfocuslicensing/bin, I purposefully un-installed the Visual COBOL PE Eclipse license that had been installed along with the Visual COBOL PE Eclipse product.

Then I started Eclipse.  After confirming the location of the workspace, I got the screen saying "Unable to find a license for Visual COBOL for Eclipse on this machine", and offering two radio-buttons:  "I have a full license", and "I want to activate the free product".  I ignored this screen by clicking the Cancel button, then proceeded into Eclipse.  The COBOL perspective was not visible.  But, in Help > About > Installation Details, I could see COBOL in both the Features and the Plug-ins, if I scrolled down far enough.

In the screen captures for your Features and Plug-ins, I cannot tell whether you scrolled all the way, but I assume you probably did.  So perhaps I am not reproducing the same symptoms as your machine.

When you bring up Eclipse, does it show an "Unable to find license" screen?

On your machine, what is the output of:

cd /var/microfocuslicensing/bin

sh cesadmintool.sh

I am surprised that you never see the licensing message when you start Eclipse.  Perhaps something went wrong during the product installation.

When I downloaded and installed Visual COBOL for Eclipse Personal Edition, the downloaded file was named:

setup_visualcobol_deveclipse_2.3_redhat_x86_64

It was 924682329 bytes, as shown by ls -l, and its checksum was:

# cksum setup_visualcobol_deveclipse_2.3_redhat_x86_64

3962703186 924682329 setup_visualcobol_deveclipse_2.3_redhat_x86_64

Does this match the properties of the file that you downloaded?

Also, installation created a log file named:

VisualCOBOLEclipse2.3.log

Do you also see a log file from your installation?  If so, does it contain any error messages?

setup_visualcobol_deveclipse_2.3_redhat_x86_64   -- my downloaded file name is correct

924682329 bytes   -- my file size is the same as yours

3962703186 924682329   -- checksum values are identical as yours

Installation is pretty straightforward and smooth:

First time run,  it asked me missing pax package (if I remember correctly, it is pax)

then I install it -- yum install pax

Second time run, it complained cannot identify my platform  -- that is understandable,  RHEL 7.2 might be  new to PE2.3, it is not on PE 2.3 supported OS list, but it does not mean it is not compatible.

It asked me to use -noplatformcheck flag to run.

Then I just followed the instruction. no further error.

I am wondering with the same email address,  how many PE2.3 copies I can install and activate?

I installed PE2.3 for Visual Studio 2015 and PE2.3 Eclipse on Windows 10.

The intent of PE is to learn the product. Therefore, it should only be installed on one system. And our system indicates that  you have  already activated the license.  If you are intending to evaluate the product for future purchase, then you should work with our Sales Team to conduct a formal evaluation, which can occur on multilple systems. You would also receive support during this process. Please let me know if you would like someone from Sales to contact you.

My main purpose is try to see I can use it to create a simple COBOL DB2 stored procedure.  hooked it up with DB2 server I installed on my REDHAT Enterprise 7.2.  Then called it from Windows .NET application.

That is my simple goal -- but it seems a long way to go.

Windows Installation is purely due to an easy start.

As Phil pointed out the Visual COBOL Personal Edition is not really the correct product choice for what you are trying to do which is basically a POC.

The PE version is an educational tool for students who desire to learn COBOL.

For any other type of scenario you should contact your local Micro Focus Account Manager to set you up with a 30 day evaluation copy of the products you require.

If you need products on multiple platforms then they can accommodate you.

Thanks

Maybe I looked at the wrong product.    Can someone confirm it -- I cannot use MicroFocus Visual COBOL Personal Edition  to create a simple DB2 COBOL stored procedure.   What will be the correct tools for me.  or technically it is impossible to use any MicroFocus products to implement my simple Proof Of Concept on REDHAT 7.2? (Maybe even on Windows)

I searched on internet,   I cannot find any answer.

If can do it successfully,  I want to publish my article with all instructions inside to help others.

You can use Visual COBOL PE to create a simple DB2 COBOL stored procedure. The process is documented under the Data Access-->Database Access section of the docs under COBOL DB2 Stored Procedures here

The problem is the mixture.of products that you are trying to use. If you wish to deploy the stored procedure under DB2 on Windows then you would use the Visual COBOL for Visual Studio product and created native .dll files for deployment. Since there is no companion COBOL Server product for Visual COBOL PE then you can only deploy this on the same machine on which Visual COBOL is installed. That means your DB2 would have to be local.

If you wanted to deploy on Linux then you would need to use the Visual COBOL Eclipse product for Linux so that you could then created native executables for Linux. Again since there is no companion COBOL Server product you would have to deploy your stored procedures on the same machine on which Visual COBOL Eclipse is running.

If you had a fully licensed product set then you could use the Visual COBOL Eclipse product on Windows and do remote development on your Linux system using the Visual COBOL DevHub product for Linux.

So with the Visual COBOL PE product you are limited to a single product running on a single platform. You can either use Windows or Linux but not both.

Thanks.

Yes,  That is the answer I want to know.  If I can really go through all the steps required in the documents and make a simple COBOL DB2 stored procedure,  accept an input char(20) parameter, output a string char(60). such as - I can call that DB2 stored procedure from .NET, input 'Jack',   return from COBOL DB2 Stored Procedure as "Jack, Happy COBOL DB2".   Then my purpose is achieved.

I have DB2 LUW 10.5 running on my REDHAT 7.2.   plan to follow the document. to create that simple COBOL DB2 stored procedure.

I have Visual Studio on Windows10,  plan to create a simple test .NET client application to call that DB2 Proc.
