I installed Visual Studio 2017 Professional v15.9.7 on Windows 10 v1803, and then Visual COBOL for Visual Studio 2017 v4.0 followed by Patch Update #6.  Today notifications within Visual Studio is telling me that v15.9.8 is available.  Do I just download and apply it, or is there anything special or extra that I must do because of the presence of Visual COBOL?

You should be able to just apply it. I've done that several times with Visual Studio installations that also have Visual COBOL, and haven't had a problem. Be aware that Visual Studio updates often require restarting Windows, for some unfathomable reason.

You should just be able to apply the latest Visual Studio Updates without changing your Visual COBOL installation at all.
