Hi Rob,
The start and stop functions are only about the sending of messages on a running UTIMER component. You do not need to call the stop operation before you implicitly or explicitly destroy the UTIMER's component instance.

So, if I start utimer from within a form, is it attached or detached by default? If detached, then it would only stop where the application itself is exited no?
If attached, can it be started detached?

The UTIMER instance is running detached.
And you are correct, if the UTIMER is not stopped explicitly then it will run until the application is closed. So in case a UTIMER instance is "attached" to a specific component instance then it might be a good idea to delete the UTIMER instance in (e.g.) the CLEANUP operation of that component.
