32-bit Java Support in Uniface Will Not Continue in Future Versions

If you're running Uniface in a 32-bit environment and using Java-based features, including Java Call-in or USYSXSLT, this announcement affects you.

Java has moved firmly towards 64-bit: current releases are 64-bit only, and no further 32-bit builds are being produced. As a result, it may not be possible for Uniface to continue supporting 32-bit Java in versions beyond 10.4.04.

Java 32-bit Call-in and USYSXSLT are deprecated in Uniface 10.4.04, however remain part of the Uniface distribution. What has changed is that, as of 10.4.04, Uniface no longer distributes 32-bit Java itself. If you are using Java Call-in or USYSXSLT with 32-bit Uniface, you can continue to do so, but you will need to supply your own 32-bit Java runtime.

To be clear about what our support covers: we supply the Java Call-in and USYSXSLT components themselves. If you raise an issue while running on 32-bit Java, we will need it to be reproducible on 64-bit before we can investigate it further.

Why is this happening?

This change is driven by the direction of Java itself, not by Uniface. Modern Java distributions are no longer built for 32-bit, which leaves us with no supported 32-bit Java to build against or certify going forward. We know that some of you still rely on established 32-bit environments, and we want to support that transition as far as we reasonably can. But because we depend on a 32-bit Java build existing in the first place, there's a limit to how long we can keep this option open.

What does this mean for you?

If you currently use Java Call-in or USYSXSLT with a 32-bit Java, we recommend moving to a 64-bit Uniface environment paired with a 64-bit Java runtime . This isn't mandatory, as you can continue to supply your own 32-bit Java for now, but given the direction Java has taken, 64-bit is the more sustainable long-term option. Here is what that transition generally looks like:

  1. Assess your current setup. Identify which applications use Java Call-in or USYSXSLT, and whether they rely on 32-bit Java.
  2. Migrate to 64-bit Uniface. Install and configure the 64-bit version of Uniface. You can use the 64-bit Java distribution included with the Uniface installation, or install a supported 64-bit Java yourself.
  3. Test your Java integrations. Validate that your Java Call-in calls and USYSXSLT work correctly in the new 64-bit environment before going live.

We recommend starting this testing now, while 10.4.04 is still current. Doing it ahead of time gives you space to surface any compatibility issues without the pressure of an impending cut-off.
