I have a challenge to automate the creation of a backup file for an existing data file. The data file being backed up will vary and they can be hashed or dynamic files. It has been reasonably straight forward until I came to the effort to support an existing dynamic file. All my previous posts about dynamic files are in an attempt to better understand how I can assess the existing file such that I can create the backup file using well-optimised specifications so the item copy process is as quick/efficient as possible. I was first thinking that ANALYZE.FILE might help determine both the Minimum modulo needed as well as the group size needed to properly cater for the data, but now I'm unsure if that is the best approach. My alternative method is to simply count the number of items in the existing file and generate an average item size, then set the MINIMUM.MODULO to the item count and set the RECORD.SIZE to the average item size and let UV's Dynamic file magic do it's work. We have a CICS application hat we intend to use without modifications with a CICS web service.  In the DFHCOMMAREA there are COMP and COMP-3 fields,  when generating the WSDL they are defined as short but this causes an Execution error : file 'CAS0CWSU' error code: 114, pc=0, call=1, seg=0 114 Attempt to access item beyond bounds of memory (Signal 11) .  Are these data types supported and if yes how to describe them?  Thanks#soapinterface#CICS#cicswebservices#SOAP#EnterpriseDeveloper#EnterpriseServer#comp-3

In Folio Views v4.9.90.0, after Importing or Pasting a text file, is there a way to Replace double CRLFs in the text file with a new Record (CtlShft-Enter)? Currently I have to manually Paste in the new Record. Back in the days of the Flat File Format, I could get by.

The Rocket port of clear fails as does tput clear under TN3270 OMVS yet the IBM provided versions in /bin do work. Am I missing something with the Rocket versions?------------------------------LionelDyck

I am taking the Micro Focus COBOL Fundamentals course (https://www.microfocus.com/en-us/cobol). I have installed the "Learn COBOL" extension into my pre-existing Visual Studio Code installation (using the extensions menu). Following the video instructions I have created a file called "Hello World.cbl" and typed in the COBOL code suggested. My program runs fine, but it does show an error as shown in the screenshot below. This suggests to me that something about my Visual Studio Setup is not correct. I had to add .cbl as a file extension because it did complain about that. So I assume there is also something else not correctly applied from the Micro Focus extension installation. The video at this part of the course suggests that we write this Hello World program to check that our environment is correctly set up, but then it does not provide any assistance in getting it correctly setup if it is not. I'm looking for some information regarding the use of CALLC. Particularly if my source code will need to include the jsystem.h and where I should store the .so / source code on the system (or setup a path so a jbase program can call it). The old zumasys docs aren't quite enough and I couldn't find anything in the Rocket documentation. Edit - can't reply for some reason. I am on UD 8 myself but they are on 7.3 with no upgrade coming anytime soon, so wholefile is out. File has gone all the way down to zero records several times and we're still at ~2M modulo. I have come to the conclusion that merging isn't a thing dynamic files do on this release, so am working this problem from another angle. These files don't have an optimal config, they've got a bunch of random stuff flowing through them. Unidata 7.3.7 Windows I need help understanding merging and dynamic files.   I have a file that I think should be merging, but it never does. Disk space is not a concern, I just need to get the modulo down to something reasonable. Normal state for this file is a low recordcount, but periodic updates push huge amounts of data to it temporarily. Converting it to static or changing it to a DIR-type file are both not options. We are running version Rel 08.2B and I have a view that joins some 24/7 used tables to some new extended information tables and the view is used to populate a dashboard UI. There is no data being held, its a view and its a join view which is rarely used for any kind of file updates (except if you use instead of triggers which I am NOT). I can manually create this view using an SQL CLIENT ODBC connection without issue, but for some reason when I use ALDON to promote these types of views it always hangs up for some exclusive lock issue with at least 1 of the tables in the join. I don't understand why this is? Is it the way we have ALDON set up, can we fix this with a configuration setting?

We have been implementing an upgrade from Visual COBOL 2.3.2 to COBOL 8.6 and have been utilizing it within our development environment from Visual Studio.  We have now moved to our TFS server which is 14.114.26403.0 (Tfs2015.Update4) running on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter. Initially our TFS build was failing due to the missing COBOL version in our project files however after this was updated, we received errors relating to the MicroFocus.COBOL.CurrentVersion.targets.  The first issue was with the same version error, however after fixing the version configuration in the targets file we are running into more issues with the builds.  Before I go modifying anything else to have this working, I'd like to ensure I am going along the right path.
