Problem: By default, RM/COBOL will only allow inputting 7-bit ASCII characters into a terminal ACCEPT field.  However, international characters, such as accented vowels, are only available in the 8-bit character encoding space. I have a piece of code which have been running fine in Net Express. When compiling the same in visual COBOL for IDE I am getting some error.   The error are :  COBCH0071S PROCEDURE DIVISION missing or unknown statement and COBCH0082S COBOL Division or Section header encountered in incorrect order   Below is the part of the code with the lines highlighted which is giving me error.   file-control. 001100 select temp-b-sec-in-file assign to ut-s-insort.001100 select sort-file assign to ut-s-sortwk01.001200 select temp-b-sec-out-file assign to ut-s-outsort.006900 i-o-control. 007000 apply write-only on temp-b-sec-out-file. 002700 data division. 002800 file section. 012400 fd temp-b-sec-in-file 012500 recording mode is v 012600 block contains 0 records 012700 record contains 202 to 30704 characters012800 label records are standard012900 data records are temp-b-sec-rec-in-a, 013000 temp-b-sec-rec-in-b.

My company go over from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012.Now I work with Net Express 5.1. I have some questions :- Is it possible to covert to Visual COBOL for Eclipse on a Windows server 2008 ?- Are there "surprises" to be expected when converting to Visual Cobol take place ?- Is it possible to use/run Net Express 5.1 Runtime at the same time with Visual COBOL runtime in Acceptance test and Production

Is Visual COBOL for Visual Studio supported on SUSE Linux ?

Problem: A Dialog System application fails with the following error when it does a CALLOUT to "dsdir": Load error: file 'mfdir2'error code: 173, pc=0, call=1, seg=0,173 Called program file not found in drive/directory. Solution: This RTS 173 on 'mfdir2' occurs when the application is linked as 'Console Application' in Visual COBOL. It should be linked as 'Windows Application' instead. Here are the steps to resolve this issue: open the project in Visual Studio open the project properties select Windows Application from the Output Type drop-down under Application properties rebuild the project redeploy the application The equivalent of the above from the command line is to use the -g switch in the cbllink command, e.g. cbllink -g -v -re ...#VisualCOBOL

What's going on here? How do I do it?

 I have been going through the book and doing all of the examples. Everything went fine until I got to Ch10.  I had a problem where I could not double click to generate the button click code, so I thought maybe my files got corrupted and downloaded Ch10 again. However, when I did, I was not able to locate  the AgencyControl.dll file(this is the file that builds the fields for the New Lease form). Is it possible to get another copy of Ch10 with the required dll in it?#VisualCOBOL

Problem: When building a project, all output files are created in one location that is specified from the COBOL properties as Output Path. Is there a way to create the .exe in a different folder leaving all the other generated files in the output path? Solution: It is not possible to have the .exe created in a different folder while the rest of the generated files get created in the output folder. However, a post-build event can be used to have the .exe file to be copied to another folder after a successful build. Problem Using CJAVA-SETSYSTEMPROPERTY to set the CLASSPATH environment variable does not appear to set it correctly. The class is not found at CALL "C$JAVA" USING CJAVA-NEW. Setting the CLASSPATH in the runtime configuration file variable JAVA_OPTIONS works as expected.   Resolution CJAVA-SETSYSTEMPROPERTY function is working properly. However modifying the CLASSPATH with the System.setProperty method AFTER the JVM is started will have no effect. Each JVM instance has its own properties. The system class loader is initialized at a very early point in the start-up sequence. It copies the CLASSPATH into its own data structures, and the property is not read again, therefore changing it again using CJAVA-SETSYSTEMPROPERTY, once it has started, will have no effect. It needs to be set before the JVM is started.

Problem Calling C$FILEINFO and C$COPY using a file with a name that includes a diacritical character does not work. The data item contains the correct file name but neither C$FILEINFO or C$COPY will find the file.   Resolution The UNICODE changes in 10.1 were strictly for certain aspects of the runtime: DISPLAY/ACCEPT XML file contents SQL Server data Not all aspects of the runtime handle UNICODE. For example, reference modification still works byte-by-byte, and not character-by-character. Although the filename may appear correct in the program, that is no guarantee that the standard library routines will support it.

Problem: Back in Net Express, the location of the Dialog System's .icn side file had to be added to the COBDIR environment variable if it did not reside in the current folder. How does the Dialog System's .icn side file get resolved then in Visual COBOL if COBDIR is now strictly used for pointing to the installation folder? Solution: In Visual COBOL or COBOL Server, the COBDATA environment variable can be used to resolve the Dialog System's .icn side file.#DS#VisualCOBOL

We are having a serious issue that is causing a group of our users to get a Windows error to be thrown that is kicking them out of our application.  When we look at the dump of the error we see the following: From watching the recordings of the users it seems this might be happening if they are having some network slowness and click multiple times on an object or maybe click on menu options that are behind a screen being generated.  We are not 100% sure yet exactly how to duplicate but hoped that someone might have seen this issue before that might have some ideas. Our application is accessed via Citrix Windows Desktops using thin-client technology. Thanks, for any help.

Problem: 'Connection is busy with results for another command ' error received when executing a COBOL application where the program tries to connect to an SQL Server database. Resolution: This SQL Server error message is thrown when there are multiple connections going to the same database, through the same connection driver e.g. ODBC. The error is not specific to the COBOL language and can be resolved by enabling the MARS (multiple active results sets) SQL directive. This can be set at a database level and/or in the SQL COBOL compilation directives by specifying SQL(MARS).

Problem: There is an issue in tool-tip during a debug session when a variable contains a low-value. In this case, the shown content is cut after the low-value and you are not able to see the whole content. This also happens in the auto-window and the monitor-window. In Net Express the content was fully shown. Resolution: This behaviour is expected in Visual Studio. The tool-tip displays the value of the item as a string and strings are terminated by a null byte. If you hover over a buffer in a C/C program containing a null byte you see exactly the same behaviour.  The tool-tip has a magnifying glass and if you click the arrow next to it and select the Text Visualizer the entire content of the item is displayed when debugging native code, with the null byte shown as '.'.

Hi all. We notice that from runtime versione 9.2.2 (or higher) the DLL convention seemes to be automatic set by the runtime ignoring the user specification. Is it correct ? Can we trust it and stop explicitly setting the environmental variable ?   Thank you -- Davide Giudici#extend#DLL#AcuCobol

Hi, we encountered an issue with Vietnamese characters whereby the we can input and save the record into vision 3 file. However when we recall the record, the Vietnamese character will show up as '?'. This does not happen in the previous version which is v10.0.0. For additional information, we are using the Vietkey software to input Vietnamese and it is actually VISCII character set. Any configuration parameters that will affect this? We have tried both TRANSLATE_TO_ANSI and COBOL_CHARACTER_SET, both does not work.

I have a new CR3003 compact USB Cash Drawer because the new computers doesn't have serial port. The cash drawer is already configured like you can see in the picture. I need help to understand why it's doesn't work. Serial cash drawer with real port work good but now look like cobol can't communicate appropriately using USB cable HID to Virtual COM Port. The Cash Drawer open good using that program, but from rmcobol program doesn't work, ignore. This is the windows configuration port.     Wascar Guerrero.

In Sept I bought the Visual COBOL book from MF and downloaded VCVS PE which worked just fine. But I had to get away from it for a while and now it tells me that my trial has expired. I thought the PE version lasted longer than 30 days. I tried downloading it again, but still have the same problem, your trial has expired. I will need VCVS PE to finish the book and I was wondering if there is some way to download it again without getting the error message?? Thanks. 

Problem: When rebuilding the version 10.1.0 Runtime on Windows there are errors about missing libraries: acme2.lib, avision5.lib and wcpp32.lib. Solution: 1. Download libpdf.zip attached to this article, which contains two libraries missing from the 10.1.0 installation, and extract to the lib directory of your 10.1.0 installation. 2. Open the .sln (in the lib directory of the 10.1.0 installation) in Visual Studio 2012 and accept the prompt to “Update VC Projects”. Note that you must use Visual Studio 2012. 3. In the Visual Studio Solution Explorer remove these three files under ‘Source Files’:      acme2.lib      avision5.lib      wcpp32.lib 4. I have a problem figuring out how to control threads. Have 2 programs: Program1 should stay in control, program2 contains a window that the user may activate. Summary of source: --- Program1 (called from my main application): display floating window, modeless            bind to thread. call thread "Program2". display screen-1. accept screen-1.  --- Program2: display floating windows, modeless, bind to thread. display screen-2 accept screen-2 --- My problem is that control is in Program2 and not in Program1 even if Program1 displays and accept screen-1. User has to click window in Program1 to make it active. What do I do wrong?

I have a set out .cbl files and migrating the system from Solaris to Linux. The executable which were used earlier were in .out format and called through a shell script. I have been trying to compile the the .cbl files using Visual COBOL for Studio. After compiling the executable created, have extension as .int. I would like to know how to convert them to .out so that I don't need to change anything in the script.
